Matthew Langford Perry (August 19, 1969 – October 28, 2023) was an American-Canadian actor, comedian and producer.
He is best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the NBC television sitcom Friends (1994–2004), for which he earned a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Perry was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, to Suzanne Marie (Langford), a Canadian journalist, and John Bennett Perry, an American actor. He has two younger siblings, Mia Perry and Madeleine Morrison, and three older half-siblings from his father’s first marriage. Perry’s parents divorced when he was one year old, and he was raised primarily by his mother in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Perry began his acting career at the age of 15, appearing in several high school stage productions. He moved to Los Angeles in 1986 to pursue a career in acting, and quickly landed guest roles on several television series, including Boys Will Be Boys (1987), Valerie (1990), and Sydney (1990). In 1993, he landed his first starring role in the ABC sitcom Second Chances, which was canceled after only 13 episodes.
In 1994, Perry was cast as Chandler Bing on Friends. The series became a huge success, and Perry became one of the most popular actors on television.
